Der Frankfurter Komponist Heinz Werner Zimmermann wurde in den sechziger Jahren weltweit bekannt durch seine einfallsreiche Verquickung traditioneller kirchenmusikalischer Kompositionsformen mit Rhythmen und Harmonien des Jazz. Ähnlich schwungvoll, fröhlich und rhythmisch ist die Musik des Ungarn Karai, der die komplizierte Rhythmik ungarischer Volksmusik mit gregorianischen Elementen kombiniert.
