Drei Komponisten, die zur gleichen Zeit gelebt haben finden völlig unterschiedliche Tonsprachen für Musik der Fastenzeit: Der Anglikaner Wesley führt die Tradition des Anthems - der Motette mit Orgelbegleitung - in einem großen, sprachgewaltigen, doppelchörigen Chorwerk fort, der Breslauer Komponist Brosig orientiert sich ganz an Palestrina während das berühmteste Werk, das "Christus factus est" von Bruckner das gesamte Spektrum der Stimme ebenso ausnutzt wie die komplexesten Harmonien - so hat das Werk sogar in die Popmusik Einzug gehalten.
